"He has the three things that are necessary to establish an authoritarian government [a national police force, gun control and control over the press]. And so we need to be ever-vigilant, because freedom is precious," -Congressman Paul Broun (R-GA).
Now I don't claim to be the most self-aware person on the face of the planet but for these people to be saying these things after watching the Bush administration walk all over personal freedoms and privacy rights for eight long years absolutely staggers the mind. I thought that the American people came together really effectively after 9/11, finding a common strength and purpose of thought but that was nothing compared to how efficiently the political right in this country (while remaining fairly rudderless on any other issues) has closed it's obstructionist ranks since Obama's inauguration last January. I'm afraid that Godwin's Law doesn't apply to veiled references to Hitleresque behavior so I won't be invoking it here but you get the idea I'm sure.

I'm afraid Godwin's Law has already been invoked on Paul Broun before your post arrived....
From totally not racist Georgia Congressman Paul Broun in November 2008:
"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist." - Republican Congressman Paul Broun.
Who proudly stands behind his comments.
I remember that now that you bring it up, Gene. If we could just get Godwin's Law written into the constitution I have a feeling that most of Obama's enemies would be at a loss for words when criticizing him and his policies.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope to hear from you again in the future.
