Picture Of The Day

Just go ahead and forget everything you know about the word "awesome" because this painting of Batman fighting a shark with a lightsaber just redefined it.

Picture Of The Day

And no, that isn't Photoshopped:

A 'monster' great white shark measuring up to 20 ft long is on the prowl off a popular Queensland beach, according to officials.

Swimmers were warned to stay out of the water off Stradbroke Island after the shark mauled another smaller great white which had been hooked on a baited drum line.

The 10-foot great white was almost bitten in half.

The fictional shark at the centre of the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Jaws was estimated to be just five feet longer.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

The World's Second Largest Aquarium Tank

From TYWKIWDBI:

The main tank at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. The 'Kuroshio Sea' holds 7,500 cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water. The music accompanying the video is "Please Don't Go" by Barcelona.

It's a beautiful and majestic sight. I think one can't help but have a moment's dismay at the loss of freedom for these creatures that were previously cruising an unlimited expanse of ocean, but perhaps if displays like this draw the public's attention to the wonders of the ocean, then that provides sufficient justification.
Watch it full screen for maximum coolness:

Sardine Run

I've always thought that sardines came from little tins with a key attached to them but apparently I've been wrong:

This David Attenborough-narrated video from the Natures Great Events series is, in my view, one of the most spectacular nature segments I've ever seen. Off the coast of South Africa, a mass of sardines is attacked by a formidable array of predators. The surface view of the army of dolphins is impressive, but when the gannetts plunge like arrows into the ocean, then fly underwater, the scene is truly awe-inspiring.
I can't decide if I'd consider this more akin to a choreographed ballet or an aerial dogfight but either way it's incredible to watch:

Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus Trailer

Yeah, that's right. Why, you ask? Why the hell not?:

I was wondering where Lorenzo Lamas has been hiding since Renegade.

Picture Of The Day

From National Geographic:

Flaring the gills that give the species its name, a frilled shark swims at Japan's Awashima Marine Park on Sunday, January 21, 2007. Sightings of living frilled sharks are rare, because the fish generally remain thousands of feet beneath the water's surface.

Spotted by a fisher on January 21, this 5.3-foot (160-centimeter) shark was transferred to the marine park, where it was placed in a seawater pool.

"We think it may have come to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters," a park official told the Reuters news service. But the truth may never be known, since the "living fossil" died hours after it was caught.

Is it just me or does this thing remind you of Falkor the luckdragon?

Goblin Shark Freaks Me Right The Hell Out

This is the first time I've ever seen or even heard of these scary looking creatures; apparently they live near the ocean bottom and are rarely seen although their numbers are known to be plentiful enough that they are not considered endangered in any way. And curiously: up to 25% of their body weight is from their livers; scientists have no idea what they need these giant livers for but I'm guessing beer pong. Check out the video from Japan:
