The Tax Man Cometh

It's tax day again; hope you're all getting big refunds this year. In case you've been wondering what the government is doing with all of your hard-earned dough, you can click on the image above to view a break down of the discretionary allocation process. It's data from 2004 but still quite telling as far as relative percentages are concerned; think of all the great things we could do with just a fraction of that military budget (which doesn't include any of the costs for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, conveniently enough). Death and taxes, indeed.

Pretty cool graphic. We're getting our biggest refund yet as non-students (due to the new house), but I'd still rather owe. I don't like the idea of these interest-free loans to the government.

I also don't think I agree with the economic stimulus, but I can't complain too loudly since I should be getting a $1,200 check. While I would usually reinvest it immediately, my stepsister's destination wedding is dictating otherwise. So I guess the plan worked for at least one household, no matter if it fails everywhere else.

I think the stimulus is just a distraction, a little gift to appease the people until Bush can get back to Crawford. And I'm going to do what I assume most people will: pay off a bit of the debt that got us into this mess in the first place.
