Apparently, they were stolen from Courtney Love's home along with a lot of her clothes and some jewelry. The silver lining is that this tragedy may finally rid us of Love herself:

If I don't get them back I don't know what I'll do."Now you're probably wondering what incredibly inpenatrable, yet still dignified, hiding place she chose for Cobain's remains. Yep, that's right: she kept them in a pink teddy-bear-shaped bag along with a lock of his hair. I daresay that Cobain would be spinning in his grave right now, if he wasn't just a stolen pile of ash.

Not to sound like an asshole (because I pridefully consider myself a dick), but I would totally snort Cobain's ashes. No shit.
