Texas Police Ticket For Not Speaking English

Really, Texas?:

Police officials say they have uncovered 38 cases where Dallas officers improperly cited drivers for not being able to speak English.

Chief David Kunkle said Friday the discovery came after a woman was pulled over earlier this month for making an illegal U-turn and was given a ticket for being a "non-English speaking driver."

Ed Morrisy has the definitive comment:
This is Texas, of course. And if English was good enough for the Lord Jesus Christ, it's good enough for them.
English, motherfucker! Do you speak it!? You better.

I repeat. Isn't it interesting that the righties simply cannot spell or write grammatically?

Correct spelling isn't important to wingnuts, Leslie. That's for over-educated elitists. What's important is how you feel the word should be spelled.

LP and JBW. It's my constitutional right to spell a word however I want. Don't tread on me. Keep your socialism in Canadia.

Being an "insider" on this one, I will further add the note that these citations are meant for taxi drivers... who are required to speak English. Apparently there hasn't been a real detailed training about every single citation that's listed in their little ticketing software though.

I also read that these citations are for commercial violations, one L. My point in posting is that this is obviously a culture of racism on the behalf of the Dallas police force which is abusing its power by issuing these citations in this way.

Or you could have 6 power-happy jerks who became cops so they could legally be a-holes.

You ever catch wind of the Ryan Moats story out that way? I guess you could blame all this on racism, but I tend to believe it's more of the former.

Admittedly I'm extrapolating a bit here one L but I also don't think that it's a stretch to suppose that there is an element of power-happy racism within a Texas police department.

I've been stopped by enough of these guys in Texas (and as far as Massachusetts) that we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Cops pulling people over for traffic infractions are oftentimes a bunch of jerks. Who knows their reasons.

Agreed that cops can be real pricks one L but I'm just saying that there aren't many reasons to write a bullshit ticket for not speaking English other than racist ones.

Perhaps they are just on a power trip but have you ever noticed that the people who are most adamant about making English the "official" language of the United States also seem to have problems with anyone who has brown skin? And that this kind of prejudice only increases the further South one travels?

Again, maybe I'm generalizing (and I'm the last person to bitch about racism in a knee-jerk fashion) but I have a feeling that if someone told you that there was an inherent streak of racism running through the DPD you wouldn't be all that surprised.
