Maybe I don't understand politics, but I think this race would be a nailbiter if his running mate was Lieberman. Would his "base" have really abstained from voting and virtually handed the election to their mortal enemies? Somehow I doubt it.
Never underestimate the prejudice of Christian Republicans towards Jewish Democrats; trust me: someone with a much deeper understanding of demographics than myself ran these numbers and decided that Palin was the better bet, against McCain's first choice. I feel like I understand politics at least well enough to make a definitive statement such as that.
