Something Someone Else Said

"From W's former chief of staff, Andy Card:

I found that Ronald Reagan and both President Bushes treated the Oval Office with tremendous respect. They treated the Office of the Presidency with tremendous respect. And some of that respect was reflected in how they expected people to behave, how they expected them to dress when they walked into the symbol of freedom for the world, the Oval Office. And yes, I'm disappointed to see the casual, laissez faire, short sleeves, no shirt and tie, no jacket, kind of locker room experience that seems to be taking place in this White House and the Oval Office.

Because that's what really matters. You need to be well dressed while you're destroying the separation of powers, suspending habeas corpus, spying on American citizens and authorizing torture." -Ed Brayton, Dispatches From The Culture Wars

Since Obama took office two weeks ago the Russians said they wanted to help in Afghanistan. Women now have protection from skulduggerous assholes keeping them from making the same as men for the same work. The Republicans in the House have been exposed as the partisan hacks that care nothing about what's going on with our economy. And this joker is feigning anger because President Obama wasn't wearing a sportcoat. And the media dutifully reported this nonsense. At least we now know the Bush Administration's plan for saving the ecomomy. Make everyone wear a nice suit and tie.

To look good is to feel good.

Another point...

The Oval Office is emphatically not "the symbol of freedom for the world", thank you very much, Mr Card.

There are other countries with their own governments, symbols, traditions and concepts of political freedom.
In fact, the very presumption in that obnoxiously casual remark sends exactly the opposite message.
