God vs Satan

Racked up quite the body count, didn't He? And what's Satan's problem? Tired? Evil, but not evil enough? Pussy.

Satan doesn't gain any advantage to killing people... but I'm questioning the legitimacy of this user-provided graph in the first place. I read somewhere as recently as this week that God killed 2,391,421 people in the old testament alone. If you want to gain any credibility, go through and do the accurate count yourself. I'll buy that.

Not that I care, because I find the entire argument academic at best, but if you're throwing 2,391,421 against 2,038,344, you better have some hard-core documentation to back that shit up, because 2 million plus is the same everywhere on the planet. Just saying.

It's a common misconception that Christianity says God is some cuddly grandpa figure. Not true. To me, it's much like that Bill Cosby quote, "I brought you into this world, I'll take you out."

If one were making up the bible, why not make God a big teddy bear? While I don't submit this as "proof" of the veracity of bible, consider this: much of what happens is the bible does not make for good copy, until you dig deeper. Throwing out stats like 2+ million killed without the context, is a simplistic way to attack the bible.

First, these aren't my stats. And second, if I were attacking anything it would be the veracity of the existence of an invisible guy who knows and sees everything being responsible for millions of deaths. Sometimes people just turn into pillars of salt on their own; that's just scientific fact.

So if God doesn't appear before today's society, he doesn't exist? The story of Jesus is well documented in the bible. He appeared before quite a few people who then wrote about it.

Most of those people killed by God were doing harm towards others, they only cared about themselves, and worshipped Baal or other gods in the area. If you were the big boss at a company and your employees were hanging up posters of your competition around the office and profaning your company, I'm pretty sure you'd give them the boot.

Also, because Satan is responsible for original sin, it could be argued that he has been responsible for the death of everyone who has every lived. Please update the scoreboard accordingly. :)

I've never said that God doesn't exist; I just find the idea of his existence highly dubious (Satan's too, for that matter), as well as the idea that they are responsible for millions of deaths or sins or whatever because of some competition to win this invisible, unprovable "essence" within every human being that they then take back to their cloudy gated community or burning lake of fire.

I do believe that Jesus existed because, as you say, there is ample evidence for his existence in historical records but I also believe that the extent of his magical abilities has been greatly exaggerated (and perhaps stolen as well).

I posted the graph not to make an actual comparison of their respective body counts but to point out the absurdity of making the comparison in the first place; disputing the accuracy of these numbers is to my mind a waste of time since there is no way to know that these deaths actually occurred as a consequence of divine wrath, much less which divinity they can be attributed to.

Random question: why is bestiality illegal?

JBW said...

I truly hope that question is random, but the short answer is: because the goat can't say "no". I guess it can say "na-a-a-h"...
